On (The) Edge
On (The) Edge #10 2017
The genesis for this work relates to my fear that deeply etched patterns of history could re-emerge to reshape our democratic world. It feels like we’ve reached the edge of a political precipice with the rise and increasing strength of the ultra-far right in Australia, USA, Europe and Asia. 2016 was a year that rocked western democracies and marked the beginning of an era of political instability and uncertainty. These political fault lines are underscored by widening economic and social inequalities, warring factions of dislike and distrust together with increasing social segregation.
‘On (The) Edge’, a wall installation with various iterations (with a total of eighteen modules), explores the idea of the ‘empathy wall’ that has emerged where we feel indifferent or hostile to those who have different beliefs and values, and live in different circumstances. Increasing polarization separates and divides us. It is an ally of ideological extremism and represents a real threat to our democracy.
